When and how to use a car headlights ?

Non-compliant headlights or their misuse can be punishable by a fine of up to €135. In case of serious misconduct, you may even get your license suspended.

So, how to use the headlights properly?

There is the use imposed by law and the recommended use. The use of headlights governed by the highway code was thought to protect drivers and pedestrians.

Nevertheless, and we can see it with regard to position lights, cars are not obliged to turn them on during the day, whereas it is advisable, for everyone's safety, to keep them on at all times.

Not to see better, but because other road users can see you better when the parking lights are on.

Conversely, high beams are for better visibility and should not be used when someone is approaching from the front because they are very bright.

There are several types of headlights for different uses: 

position lights: to be seen, they have a range of 30 meters.

Low beam headlights: see and be seen, range of 100 meters

High beam: to see further 

Front fog lights: to see and be seen 

Rear fog lights: to be seen 

But then which fires to use and in which situation?

Position lights are recommended during the day and mandatory at night when visibility is high enough. At night, in order to see and be seen without dazzling other users, you must use low beams. If you drive at night and visibility is very low, for example on a winding road, you can use a high beam. 

Be careful, high beam headlights dazzle the person looking at them. Fog lights are recommended when visibility is very low, in case of heavy fog, snowfall... They can blind. Be careful, some uses of the lights, such as the use of high beams in the city or rear fog lights in rainy weather, may be misused.
