How to choose the right schoolbag for your child ?

The choice of the schoolbag is always a puzzle for parents. Between the wishes of the child and the constraints of safety and health, it is not easy to decide.

Here are our tips to help you find your way there:

  • The school bag must be light, its weight must not exceed 10% of the child's weight.
  • It must have reflective strips.
  • School bags on wheels are heavier, they should be avoided if the child has to climb stairs. If they are overfilled, wheeled satchels may twist the back.
  • The shoulder straps must be wide and padded, the satchel must not be worn low to avoid pulling the child backwards.
  • To lift his satchel, the child must learn to bend his legs and not lean forward in order to relieve his back.
  • It is advisable to have chest and waist straps to better distribute the weight.

The school bag on wheels, good or bad idea?

Positive :

  • The back is relieved of the weight and the case is easily pulled without effort.
  • It is possible to wear it on the back and the padded shoulder straps provide additional comfort.
  • School bags with wheels are useful when the child travels a long distance to get to school .

Negative :

  • A wheeled bag is often much heavier than a classic school backpack.
  • The twisting of the arm caused by rolling the satchel can cause pain in the long term, in the elbow or wrist.
  • If the child has to go up or down stairs, he must carry his satchel at arm's length.

It is therefore not recommended to have a wheeled backpack.

What type of sling / equipment for the schoolbag?

The choice of the schoolbag must be done carefully so that it lasts throughout the school year. It is recommended for the safety of the child that the bands are retro-reflective. They allow the child to be seen, even in the middle of the night. So that the child does not suffer from the weight of the schoolbag, it is advisable to have padded shoulder straps, if possible with breathable mesh material inside. Finally have a handle with a plastic tube for comfort when the satchel is carried in the hand. The addition of a plastic tube prevents damage to the hands if the weight of the satchel is heavy.
