What is HIV ?
The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is a retrovirus that is responsible for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS).
HIV is spread through bodily fluids such as semen, vaginal fluids, blood and breast milk during unprotected sex. Oral sex or blood contact with contaminated material is also concerned.
HIV attacks the body's immune cells, reproduces in them and destroys them. The most common symptoms are high fevers, headache, swollen glands and many neurological problems. HIV therefore weakens the immune system of the infected person, who then becomes very vulnerable to disease. When you are infected with HIV, it is called HIV positive.
To date, there is no vaccine or treatment for HIV. There is no cure for HIV, except for 2 cases recently.
Today, a triple therapy allows patients to live.
HIV has killed more than 31 million people since the early 1980s.
To find out if you have contracted HIV, you can and should have a blood test called an HIV antibody test. You can be tested in different centers such as a laboratory, a free screening and diagnostic information center (CEGIDD), or in association premises or even authorized mobile devices (TROD).
